Please see this link for an event at downtown Daytona in 2 weeks. Ruth Vines created the flyer. DIG (Daytona Improvement Gardeners) will be working on the rose garden on Beach Street by the river, and they invited plein air artists to paint. Several artists from the Art Consortium and others from the area are planning on painting during the event, which runs that Sunday afternoon from noon til 4pm. Visitors can try their own creative hand at creating stepping stones from recycled materials, donate a rose in a loved one's name, or try a workshop. Cory Trusty is holding a workshop at 2pm about herbal remedies for cold and flu. Hope to see you all there! Let's work together in keeping Daytona beautiful!

Synopsis: "The fourteen-acre community garden at 41st and Alameda in South Central Los Angeles is the largest of its kind in the United States. Started as a form of healing after the devastating L.A. riots in 1992, the South Central Farmers have since created a miracle in one of the country’s most blighted neighborhoods. Growing their own food. Feeding their families. Creating a community.

But now, bulldozers are poised to level their 14-acre oasis.

The Garden follows the plight of the farmers, from the tilled soil of this urban farm to the polished marble of City Hall. Mostly immigrants from Latin America, from countries where they feared for their lives if they were to speak out, we watch them organize, fight back, and demand answers:

Why was the land sold to a wealthy developer for millions less than fair-market value? Why was the transaction done in a closed-door session of the LA City Council? Why has it never been made public?

And the powers-that-be have the same response: “The garden is wonderful, but there is nothing more we can do.”

If everyone told you nothing more could be done, would you give up?"

Here Comes The Sun' Trash to Art Contest at the Marine Discovery Center 10/10/10!
There is going to be a recycled art or 'Trashformation' contest with some great prizes, at the 10/10/10 event, at the Marine Discovery Center, off the North Causeway, in New Smyrna Beach. Please bring entries to the Marine Discovery Center, Sunday, October 10th, no later than 1pm. Winners will be announced at 2pm.

1st 2nd and 3rd place winners from each age group will have their works displayed, in the front window of Jonah's Cat's Art Gallery on Flagler Ave. in New Smyna, for two weeks following the event! We are trying to make sure that each person who enters will recieve a prize for participating. First place entries from each age group will win an eco-tour for two from the Marine Discovery Center!

Arts on Stage features community artists, area restaurants tasting tables, children’s art projects, live music piped throughout the area, raffles and give-a-ways by area businesses.

Fine Art and Fine Craft Artists

Set up booths inside the building. Artists supply their own tables and chairs in Rose Room Gallery and Lobby. The only fee is 10% to Peabody Auditorium to help us continue to promote the arts.

Musicians

Small groups and solos requested to provide music on the half hour on stage in Peabody Auditorium. No entry fee; no payments. If you have CDs, you are welcome to sell them and you get bragging rights that you performed at Peabody!

Artists and Musicians will be juried before acceptance.

Volusia County’s resident professional dance company, Surfscape Contemporary Dance Theatre, presents “Another Brick in the Wall” at The Coliseum on July 9th & 10th.

Back by popular demand, this rock opera features a full-scale professional dance performance and highlights live music and ideas from Pink Floyd’s, The Wall. Dance enthusiasts and rock music lovers alike will enjoy an engaging evening of live music, light shows, videography, and professional dance. Presented in a night club setting, “Another Brick in the Wall” features the company’s highly trained dancers, compelling choreography by the company’s two founding Artistic Directors, Rachael Leonard and Kristin Polizzi, and music by Pink Floyd cover band, Earthbound Misfits. In addition, the mixed-media show will include an organic light show and performance art by PeregoLive, videography by Doug Ratcliff, and artwork by Morgan Steele. Although different from the company’s highly acclaimed repertory dance performances, Surfscape’s ground-breaking Pink Floyd tribute show is a "don't miss" event!. Although anyone is welcome to attend the performance, it is recommended for people over the age of 12.

Performances of “Another Brick in the Wall”, held at The Coliseum, are set for Friday, July 9th at 7:00pm and Saturday, July 10th at 7:00p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $15 for students/youth and can be purchased through the SCDT box office: 386-366-5108. A special "Kids Art Army with Perego" week is new this year and will include art appreciation, introduction to famous artists and their work, an Art Challenge with games and trivia, and a collaborative art mural. Perego, a local artist, will be helping the children learn more art concepts and demonstrate specific skills with different art mediums. Alice’s Garden Competition by Florida Museum for Women Artists

The Florida Museum for Women Artists is hosting a competition with the theme "Alice's Garden." Art Consortium of Volusia County member Michaela Kraemer has entered this lovely whimsical sculpture of the White Rabbit for the competition, which took her countless hours to create. This piece features faux cotton candy tree ornaments (colored cotton balls), leaves made of pages from alice's book, and beatiful fairy house house with a tree and Bunny. There are bottles labeled "Drink me" and Cupcakes with an "Eat me" sign.

Check out all the entries and show your support and vote your favorite by following the red text at the top of the entrants page. The competition ends April 17th.

ORMOND BEACH SEAFOOD FESTIVAL

The Ormond Beach Seafood Festival will be held on June 19th and 20th in historic Rockefeller Gardens overlooking the Halifax River located on the south east corner of the Granada Bridge in downtown Ormond Beach. The hours are 10AM-9PM on Saturday and 10AM-4PM on Sunday.

Luscious, local seafood of every type will be featured and presented by local restaurants. Continuous Live Musical Entertainment will be held on two stages and feature Blue Grass, Jazz, Florida Folk Music and more.

Vendors will be offering everything from beautiful jewelry to coastal art. A Children’s Corner will include magic shows, blow ups, games and entertainment for the young and young at heart.

Ongoing Certified Bob Ross Instruction in Daytona Beach

Welcome to the Art Consortium's newest member Daytona area fine artist Daniel Fisher who specializes in painting, crafts, sculpture and painting instruction. Daniel was our star fund raiser last Friday in helping us to raise money for the American Heart Association. Daniel is a certified Bob Ross instructor who currently offers classes out of his home studio in Holly Hiil and whose work is on display every weekend and durintg special event weeks at the Daytona Beach Flea Market in booth P126 .

If you are interested in learning to paint with Daniel he offers weekly classes from 9 a.m. -2 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesday with class size no larger than 3 people. These classes are $50 each an include all materials. Students go home with a finished painting. Daniel will also travel to teach classes for groups of 4-5 people on Thursdays. Hands on Haiti: Work Glove and Hand Sanitizer Collection Drive in Daytona Beach

The Fair Share Garden in Daytona Beach is collection work gloves and hand sanitizer to send to Jacmel Haiti. Fair Share realizes that in the aftermath of the earthquake catastrophe in Haiti, all of us want to do something to assist in the relief and recovery. Our own Buddy Hatcher and Ruth Vines are going to be participating at the first art festival at the Vienna's Coffeehouse in DeBary. It is held at The Parkview Point Building, 275 S. Highway 17-92 in DeBary, Saturday and Sunday, Dec 12&13, from noon til 6pm. This is indoor, so weather will not be a problem. After browsing about 30 various art setups you can enjoy gourmet coffee and pastries in an Old World European atmosphere at Claudia's coffeehouse downstairs. Visit the studio of Art Consortium member Mehg Marshall for her 5th annual holiday event in DeLand Florida this Saturday. Pottery making demonstrations will be going on throughout the day. There will be handmade pottery for sale. Jewelry, soaps and other body products will also be available from Art Consortium member Cory Trusty of Aquarian Bath as well.

Arts & Crafts in the Fair Share Garden Saturday December 5th

Join us on the first Saturday of December 5th for a morning of Arts & Crafts at the Fair Share Garden in Daytona Beach. This event is being hosted by the Fair Share Garden in conjunction with the Art Consortium of Volusia County.

Activities:
~ Community mural creation with public participation.
~ Plein Air painting and informal plein air demonstration by Ruth Vines at 10 a.m.
~ Holiday Decorating with Herb Demonstration at 11 a.m.
~ Arts & Crafts for Sale including fine art paintings, functional art pottery, fair trade Peruvian & Nicaraguan pottery, fair trade African baskets, fair trade Haitian crafts, handmade jewelry, artisan soaps and balms, natural perfumes, wine glass accessories, and framed art photography

This is a fund raising event for the Fair Share Garden. Nominal cash donations are appreciated, but not required for entry. Donations of used gardening equipment are also appreciated.

DeLand Art Festival this weekend!

Please go out and enjoy the great fall weather we are having, and support the local arts! Downtown DeLand is hosting its 2009 Annual Fall Festival of the Arts (www.delandfallfestival.com), with over 200 national artists displaying and selling their arts in the historic downtown shopping district. Near-by galleries and shops, restaurants and pubs are also open during this time. Several artists from the Art Consortium are exhibiting, too!

The festival runs Nov 21-22, Saturday and Sunday. Hope to see you there! PS: it's close to Christmas time, so do your holiday shopping now!

Daytona Beach, FL--Fair Share in partnership with the Museum of Arts and Sciences and the Downtown Farmers Market will be hosting a public screening of the new documentary "Fresh" Wednesday, November 18 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Museum of Arts and Sciences located at 352 South Nova Road in Daytona Beach, Florida 32114.

Unique from other previous documentaries on agriculture and farming which have focused on the horror of the industry, "Fresh" is a look at sustainable solutions to problems with our industrialized food system and offers ideas on the direction the movement should be headed.

Come enjoy a wholesome meal, silent auction, the movie, and an informative discussion to follow.

Schedule

6:30 pm--wholesome meal which will include samples of Organic beer and Fair Trade Organic coffee, music, and silent auction.

7:00 pm--Fresh, the movie begins, and an interactive discussion panel with follow the movie. The panel includes Commercial Horticulture Agent, Dana Venrick of the Volusia County Cooperative Extension Service; Joel Tippens of the Fair Share Urban Garden Project; and organic farmer Pauline Copello of Pauline’s Lucky Market Garden.

Event ends at 8:30 pm.

This event is a fundraiser for the Fair Share Urban Garden Project and the proceeds support establishing new community gardens and urban agriculture projects in Daytona Beach. Tickets are $15 at the door.

Story

FRESH celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system. Forging healthier, sustainable alternatives, they offer a practical vision of our food and our planet’s future. FRESH addresses an ethos that has been sweeping the nation and is a call to action America has been waiting for.

Characters

Among several main characters, FRESH features:

Will Allen - 6ft 7" former professional basketball player Will Allen is now one of the most influential leaders of the food security & urban farming movement. His farm and not-for-profit, Growing Power, have trained and inspired people in every corner of the US to start growing food sustainably. This man and his organization go beyond growing food. They provide a platform for people to share knowledge and form relationships in order to develop alternatives to the industrial food system.

Joel Salatin- world-famous sustainable farmer and entrepreneur, made famous by Michael Pollan (also in the movie) - author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma. Joel Salatin writes in his website that he is "in the redemption business: healing the land, healing the food, healing the economy, and healing the culture." By closely observing nature, Joel created a rotational grazing system that not only allows the land to heal but also allows the animals to behave the way the were meant to – as in expressing their "chicken-ness" or "pig-ness", as Joel would say.

David Ball -supermarket owner, challenging our Wal-Mart dominated economy. With the rise of Wal-Mart and other big chains, David Ball saw his family-run supermarket dying, along with a once-thriving local farm community. So he reinvented his business, partnering with area farmers to sell locally-grown food and specialty food products at an affordable price. His plan has brought the local economy back to life.

Reason

FRESH recaptures our sense of agency and makes us believe that our individual actions in fact do matter. Throughout the film we encounter the most inspiring people, ideas, and initiatives around the US. And thus, FRESH showcases real people first and foremost, connecting audiences not with facts and figures or apocalyptic policy analysis, but with personal stories of change.

Producer

Ana Joanes is a Swiss-born documentary filmmaker whose work addresses pressing social issues through character-driven narratives. After traveling internationally to study the environmental and cultural impacts of globalization, she graduated from Columbia Law School in May 2000, awarded as a Stone Scholar and Human Rights Fellow. Thereafter, Ana created Reel Youth, a video production program for youth coming out of detention. In 2003, Ana and her friend Andrew Unger produced Generation Meds, a documentary exploring our fears and misgivings about mental illness and medication. FRESH is Ana’s second feature documentary.
